Tory-led north London local authority set to contract out architectural, regeneration and planning services
Barnet Council is planning to outsource all of its built environment functions as part of a major overhaul of service delivery.
A tender document released last month on Ojeu reveals the north London local authority is set to contract out a host of services including architectural services, regeneration, strategic planning, housing strategy, building control and structures and planning development management.
“The London Borough of Barnet is looking for a strategic partner, single bidder or consortium to transform the delivery of its development and regulatory services,” the document reads.
“The borough wishes to work with the partner to provide a joined-up environmental regulation, design and management function that will develop and maintain the quality of the built environment.”
The scheme is part of Barnet’s controversial bid to cut the cost of service delivery known as One Barnet, and dubbed “easyCouncil” because of its no-frills approach and charging of residents for additional services drew comparisons with budget airline easyJet.
This strategy has run into criticism including the £1.3 million the council spent on the services of a security firm called MetPro without carrying out basic financial or security checks or putting the contract out to tender.
